About the AVL 

The Alabama Virtual Library provides all students, teachers, and citizens of the State of Alabama with online access to essential library and information resources. It is primarily a group of online databases that have magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research. Through the AVL, an equitable core of information sources is available to every student and citizen in Alabama, raising the level of excellence in schools and communities across the state.

The mission of the Birmingham Public Library is to provide the highest quality library service to our citizens for life-long learning, cultural enrichment, and enjoyment.

Basic Search

• Go to Destiny Web

• Click on the Catalog Tab

• Type the title, author, keyword, series or subject in the box

• Click on the button you want (Title, Author, etc.).

Accelerated Reader Search

• Go to Destiny

• Click on Catalog

• Click on the drop down box next to “Search Reading Programs”

• Select Accelerated Reader

• Type in reading level and # of points – you can also type in a genre, subject, author, etc.

• Hit enter

• The results are books on the specified AR Level.

Destiny Quest

• Go to Destiny

• Click on the Catalog tab

• Click on Destiny Quest in the list on the left of the screen.

• View New Arrivals

• View resource lists

• View Top Ten Books

Webpath Express Search

• Go to Destiny

• Click on the Catalog tab

• Click on WebPath Express in the list on the left.

• Type your topic in the box then choose a grade level.

Resource Lists

• Go to Destiny

• Click on the Catalog tab

• Click on Resource List in the list on the left of the screen.

• Click on Add List (on right side)

• Give the list a name and then check make public if you want it to be public.

• Click Save.
