Wenonah High School Where Champions Are Made!

We have had an exciting and eventful school year thus far; here are some highlights of our most recent successes:

Black Women’s Roundtable with Vivica A. Fox

The “Healthy, Wealthy, Wise” Women of Power Summit sponsored by Congresswoman Terri Swell was designed to bring together a delegation of women and girls participate in a summit focused on developing solutions to live healthier, wealthier & wiser lives through public policy, civic engagement, leadership development, social innovation, entrepreneurship and mentoring. Dozens of elected officials, judges, and business and civic leaders committed to lead workshops and hold one-on-one dialogue with each of the scheduled attendees. The morning assembly featured greetings from Birmingham City Schools’ Interim Superintendent Dr. Spencer Horn and a surprise from Washington, Congresswoman Terri Sewell. Female students engaged in small group sessions featuring Alabama House of Representative Merika Coleman, Mary Latimore, Sylvia Stone, Myisha Davis, Teumbay Barnes, Katrina Ross, Catrena Norris-Carter, Antionette Neely, Brenda Hung, Annetta Verin, Yolanda Neals, Tina Thornton, Lashunda Scales, and Carmela Greene-Norman. The evening assembly featured words from Gwendolyn Smith, Yolana Neals, Sylvia Stone, and Vivica A. Fox.

Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Winans Inspire Black Male Students at Alabama School

GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artists Donnie McClurkin and Marvin Winans stopped by Wenonah High School in Birmingham, AL Thursday, August 27.The two singers’ inspired male students at Wenonah, an institution with the highest number of economically disadvantaged students of any school in the area. The challenges are very real. The message was that students should not let people tell them they shouldn't pursue their dreams. Folks told Donnie he would never be a singer. Look at him now. He's performed at the White House seven times for four different presidents, he's a major recording artist “He did a great job motivating and inspiring not only the kids, but everyone in attendance today,” said producer and entertainer Q Dot Davis of McClurkin’s motivational visitation on Instagram.

Robin Given Rehearses at Wenonah High School

 September 3rd & 4th we were blessed with the opportunity to have actress Robin Givens here at Wenonah High School, as we conducted an evening rehearsal for her production of "Joy in the Morning". It lasted from 4-7 pm and we had several of our theatre students present. The show will be held on Sept. 12th at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre of the Alabama School of Fine Arts. 

Wenonah’s Ministerial Alliance

We have a newly formed Ministerial Alliance which consists of ministers in the area and across the city.  Ministers will volunteer to assist in the school as well as monitor the hallways to ensure our schools safety.

Wenonah’s Fire Science Program

 Fire Science program that will start very soon. This is a part of Wenonah preparing our students for College and Career Pathways. This program involves training for the next generation of firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

 Wenonah High School FCCLA

  The Wenonah High School chapter of Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students took top honors in the state Family Career and Community Leaders of America competition in Montgomery. They advanced to the FCCLA nationals in Washington, D.C., July 3-10. Students competed in various areas from job interviews and service projects to nutrition and fitness, securing six gold medals and four silver medals. There were over 4,000 competitors.
